Difference between Linear, Streaming and VOD

Linear

Linear service refers to a method of delivering television or radio content in a scheduled, linear manner, with programming being broadcast at set times. Viewers tune in at a specific time to watch a show or listen to a station.

Streaming

Streaming, on the other hand, refers to a method of delivering audio or video content over the internet in a continuous, non-interrupted flow, allowing the user to watch or listen to content on demand. The viewer can access the content at any time and start from the beginning, middle, or end of the content.

VOD

VOD stands for Video-on-Demand and refers to a type of media distribution system that allows users to access video content (such as movies and TV shows) over the internet, without the need for a traditional television subscription. The content is stored on servers and made available to users on demand, meaning that they can watch it at any time and at their own pace, rather than having to tune in at a specific time to watch a live broadcast.

In-short

linear service is scheduled and pre-determined.

streaming is on-demand and flexible.

VOD is different from linear service in that it offers more flexibility and control to the viewer, as they can choose what they want to watch and when they want to watch it. It is also different from streaming in that the content is stored on servers and delivered to the user in a pre-determined manner, rather than being delivered in a continuous stream over the internet.
